Greater Manchester Archaeology Day 2017 is now open for booking!!!

Archaeology Day is a day of guest speakers highlighting just some of the significant archaeological projects and excavations over the past year. There will be book stalls, society stands and displays, view locally excavated artefacts, the Historic Environment Record database for Greater Manchester to investigate and refreshments at each break. This day is designed for practitioners, professionals, and especially members of the public.

Highlights from a wide range of archaeological projects undertaken in Greater Manchester over the last year which will include:

  • The Brian Grimsditch Memorial Lecture: Guest speaker to be confirmed
  • Revealing Salford’s Fascinating Past: Excavations in the Historic City by the University of Salford, 2016-7 - Ian Miller (Salford Archaeology).
  • Four excavations of Workers’ Housing in Manchester city centre - Chris Mayo (Pre-Construct Archaeology).
  • The Archaeology of Infrastructure: the Ordsall Chord railway bridge - John Roberts (Salford Archaeology) .
  • The North West Regional Research Framework for the Historic Environment - Dr Michael Nevell (The University of Salford).
  • After the Fire: recording the historic fabric of Wythenshawe Hall - Chris Wild (Salford Archaeology).
  • STORM: Safeguarding Cultural Heritage through Technical and Organisational Management. A short introduction to the STORM project being delivered at the UK pilot site in Mellor, Stockport- Dr Rob Williamson (Mellor Archaeological Trust).
  • Toddington Lane, Wigan - Bill Aldridge (Wigan Archaeology Society)
  • 2-4 Chester Road, Castlefield - Oliver Cook (Salford Archaeology) .
  • Manchester, Greater Manchester’s Historic Textile Mills: their survival, condition and future - Norman Redhead (Greater Manchester Archaeological Advisory Service

Notes for the day
At lunch time participants will be able to look at the interactive Historic Environment Record database for Greater Manchester.

New publications will be launched and there will a chance to browse and buy archaeology books, look at finds displays by the Centre for Applied Archaeology, and view displays from local archaeology societies.

Refreshments will be provided but not lunch; you can bring your own packed lunch or make use of the local cafes or pubs.

All taking place in the wonderful setting of the Peel Building on The Crescent, within the University of Salford campus.
